G-M Cycle Principle

The Gifford-McMahon cryocooler uses adiabatic expansion of high-pressure helium gas through a displacer mechanism to achieve cryogenic temperatures. The thermodynamic process consists of two isobaric and two isochoric processes forming a complete refrigeration cycle.
